Le monde est trop confus pour une fable.

Mais j’invente un enfant à qui lire demain le conte de Barbe-bleue, ne manquant pas de lui avouer à la fin que je n’ai jamais, jamais compris pourquoi sa barbe était bleue.

- Essayons d’autres couleurs, proposerai-je.

« Une barbe rousse comme un coq ou la queue d’un renard, comme le bouc d’un démon, lui conviendrait bien mieux ».

Nous penserons alors au père de son ami Harold, roux des pieds à la tête, qui pêche le saumon argenté en Ecosse, et nous rirons longtemps à l’imaginer en Barbe-bleue, un grand coutelas à la main au pied d’un escalier criant : « Descendras-tu que je t’étripe ? ».

Nous passerons en revue toutes les barbes possibles. Mais avec chacune d’elles, c’est évident, nous aurions pu faire une grave erreur judiciaire.

Nous ne changerons rien à ses yeux pour la même raison, ni à ses sourcils, ni à son nez ou ses cheveux. D’ailleurs, très sagement, le conte n’en dit rien.

Nous reviendrons alors aux barbes impossibles.

- Il fallait qu’elle fût rouge, dira l’enfant, rouge comme le sang.

- Rouge comme le sang ! Mais quelle jeune fille eût été assez stupide pour l’épouser ? Avec une barbe rouge, elle se fût méfiée et se fût écriée comme toi que cette barbe était rouge, rouge comme le sang !

Nous essaierons une barbe jaune ; mais il arrive que des hommes aient des barbes blondes si usées par le temps qu’elles finissent par en paraître jaunes absolument.

- Verte, pensera l’enfant triomphalement, verte comme un martien, ou comme un vieux dieu de la mer croupissant dans la vase !

- Comment veux-tu, dirai-je à l’enfant, qu’une jeune fille puisse aimer, aimer vraiment, ou croire aimer, un homme qui semblerait brouter ?

- L’aimait-elle ? me dira l’enfant. N’a-t-elle pas plutôt aimé ses châteaux, sa richesse, sa puissance ?

Alors, nous resterons songeurs un long moment.

Je demanderai à l’enfant s’il aurait lui aussi ouvert la porte du placard.

- Toutes les clés peuvent être sorcières, affirmera-t-il sérieusement. Et toutes les paroles peuvent être des pièges.

- Niaiserie ! répondrai-je. Niaiserie !

Et, croyez-moi, je réussirai à lui montrer demain que la confiance est belle, et que la curiosité ne l’est pas moins.

Et puis viendra l’heure d’arrêter notre conversation. Nous n’aurons pas compris pourquoi la barbe était bleue. Mais dorénavant, nous saurons qu’elle ne pouvait pas être autrement, qu’elle est mystérieusement bleue comme le reflet des ailes d’un corbeau et l’eau noire d’un lac dans le crépuscule, et sans doute beaucoup d’autres choses qui deviennent bleues par moment sans qu’on y prenne garde, beaucoup de choses sauf les barbes précisément.

Et surtout, nous nous dirons que nous sommes bien contents que les frères de la soeur Anne soient arrivés à temps, car il fait bon croire que la Barbe bleue était un ogre comme on n’en rencontre plus,

Oh non, plus du tout.

belinda had written a children's book and turned it into a movie, which she then presented in a lecture. she had also rented a room, right next to us, and i don't know whether our room was rented or whether it was something we owned. whatever the case, we were together, as ever, my love.

but there was a conflict because you wanted me to come and see the presentation of belinda's children's book and you thought that it was good. so i did. but i was horrified when i saw it because what it consisted of was a framing of fragments: faces, bricks, bunnies - that could somehow make up people, houses, easter - and then a metamorphosis montage showing how these things can ultimately turn into each other, flow in and out of each other, so that everything that the child can see is part of the material world.

concretely, this meant that there were good lessons for children, such as how to duck when bricks are being thrown into a house. but it also had nightmarish scenes, such as the children themselves dissolving into bunnies. and i wanted no part of that. i really didn't approve.

i was so horrified that my emotions got the better of me. i cried and gasped and left the room, which was very awkward since belinda would certainly care what i thought about what she had done, as i too cared about teaching the truth to children. and i was the only person present who had also an interest, experience in writing children's books.

but as a writer, i was so immature. i just went back to our room and crawled into bed and sulked and cried waiting for you. you were tender and understanding as usual, but you made it clear, without even telling me, that i couldn't leave things like that with belinda and the group. i had to go next door and apologize to her for my outburst, show belinda at least that my problems with her book were not a judgment of her approach to children or to literature, but were connected to my own extreme sensitivity when it comes to films.

i saw that there was some truth in this whole perspective so i picked myself up, found some old clothes that would still fit from my fatter days back in my thirties: a long red men's flannel or corduroy shirt and some sloppy jeans. then i went moseying down the hall to knock on belinda's door.

she greeted me with a professional warmth - there is such a thing. i said i was sorry, that i had been really stressed out, but that i wanted now really to have a chance to read her book. she brought out the huge mock-up text that had been used to make the movie; it looked like a supersized-format comic book, and i did everything i could to look at it critically and find that it was good.

i couldn't concentrate, but my effort alone was enough. things were smoothed over between us; her son came into the picture and we greeted each other at the very moment when i realized she was showing yet another movie in the back of her apartment, which turned out to be way bigger than i thought. i saw that other neighbors were also calling on her, coming to watch the movie, and perhaps wish each other a happy passover or a happy easter. this gave me a chance to get back to my own family, far away, in arizona, of course.

Le monde est bien assez confus pour une fable,
            Et j’invente un enfant à qui dire demain
            La fable de la cigale et de la fourmi.
               Je ferai d’abord venir la cigale.
                        Ce sera le plein été
            Et je lui ferai sentir, à l’enfant, toute la joie de l’été,
            Le ciel bleu tout fiévreux et tout tremblant d’espoir
            Le soleil à ne surtout pas regarder fixement,
            Et le vacarme enivrant des cigales
            Qu’on entend même derrière les persiennes fermées,
            Même dans la buanderie où les draps sentent la lavande.
            Et du balcon de la grande barre qui ne voit pas la mer aussi,
                                   On l’entend.
            En somme, tout le monde l’entend et sait que c’est l’été,
            Le soleil, le ciel ardent, la peau chaude et nue,
            Et les fruits déjà qu’on commence à manger.
            Et l’on sait que le temps se pose et ralentit les pas,
            Chacun n’en revenant pas de l’assourdissant concert
                         Affolant l’ouïe, exténuant l’air.
                         Et pendant que la cigale s’égosille,
            Je montrerai à l’enfant, à l’ombre d’un talus, la fourmilière affairée,
            Car si l’affaire de la cigale est de chanter,
            L’affaire de la fourmi, elle, est de s’affairer.
            Nous regarderons les fourmis inlassablement porter
                         Leurs charges colossales,
            Et verrons comment plusieurs accourent au secours d’une autre,
            Nous le verrons bien car il faudrait être aveugle pour ne pas le voir,
            Et je le laisserai rêver, fasciné, devant ces innombrables fourmis
                         Dans le chant innombrable des cigales.
            Arrivera l’hiver. La cigale perd son chant.
            La fourmi s’apprête à fermer les rideaux
            Sur des réserves suffisantes pour plein d’hivers.
            Cigale nue, cigale sans maison, où iras-tu ?
            - Je connais la suite, interrompra l’enfant.
                         La fourmi n’est pas prêteuse,
                         C’est là son moindre défaut !
            - En a-t-elle beaucoup d’autres ? demanderai-je à l’enfant.
                         - Elle ne sait pas chanter !
            - Elle ne sait pas danser non plus, dirai-je alors à l’enfant.
            - Et la cigale ? La cigale, est-ce qu’elle sait danser ?
            - Mais non, elle non plus, elle ne sait pas danser !
            Nous rirons alors à gorge déployée,
                         Surtout quand j’aurai avoué
            Que moi non plus je ne sais pas danser.
            - Apprends-moi à danser, dira l’enfant rieur.
            - Mais oui, répondrai-je, pris dans son rire.
                         Mais oui, bien volontiers.
            Je mettrai une musique tzigane qui nous enivre,
            Et nous danserons follement en nous égosillant,
                         Eh bien, dansez maintenant,
                         Dansez maintenant,
                         Dansez maintenant !

and there in the desert, in the wings, as always, two who were waiting were tina and ellen. they had organized an extraordinary therapy session where they each had partners, when in fact they don't.

tina was preoccupied with solving everyone's problems and with trying to sell her house, which now had been stripped of every conceivable carpet. there were no soft surfaces, just tiles, stripped bare, and appliances, things that could not be removed. ellen was, on the contrary, preoccupied with ellen only, trying to be o.k. and somehow find the money to achieve equal status with tina and myself (who had amassed considerable wealth and power, though perhaps in opposite ways).

i was completely behind tina, who said we had to support ellen so that she (like we two) could enjoy her middle and late years with a decent façade, with reasonable-looking teeth. who could begrudge this to a sister? and things were working out, as they always tend to do.

a friend who lived in mexico had accepted a job in brazil, and he was going to give his place to ellen over the next few months. this meant the amount of money she would normally need to live on could go to fixing her teeth. so tina and i were happy, and we began to talk together about taxes, which, as women of the world, we would.

but tina, i suddenly noticed, was also in the middle of digging between two piles of coal, for what reason i cannot imagine. i chose that moment to call out to her and say, tina, you love to be vindicated, don't you? she said, yeah, i do.

so i started to tell her that our tax debacle was coming to an end, and finally we were learning: you have to write it off.

but my time with ellen was much more intimate and difficult, because she really was trying just to be all right. she was teetering between two radically different states.

at certain points, she seemed to be dissolving into a fat ugly dummy, a bald squishy mess that was turning into an android.

but then i balanced her and said no. no, ellen, you're a beautiful woman. look in the mirror and see how beautiful you are. then fire flashed in her eyes and she regained a comely face, many faces in fact that could vie with those of the finest stars. she also took hold again of her pencil, and of her long thin body, which she'd lost and found so many times before.

and there was one more image that had something to do with writing. it was me, on the bottom of one of the papers i was grading, writing: this is it - the last refuge.

Les yeux des loups

             Le monde est trop confus pour un adage
             Mais demain je trouverai l’enfant à qui lire la page
             Des loups aux sombres yeux et capables
                         De paralyser la langue
                         De ceux qu’ils voient les premiers.
                      Nous irons droit au zoo vérifier
             Auprès des cages où tournent, pleins de morosité,
                     De très grands loups efflanqués,
                      - Ah, et faméliques bien sûr aussi ! -
             S’il est vrai que leur regard ôte la voix comme dit l’adage.
             - Mais comment saurai-je, dira l’enfant,
             Qui, de lui ou de moi, aura vu l’autre le premier ?
             Je ne le sais pas plus que lui, mais qu’importe à l’histoire,
                      Les loups sont là pour penser.
             Ce n’est pas une cage en vérité, mais un haut grillage.
             Les loups vaguement tournent sans nous regarder.
             Leurs yeux reflètent une obsession perdue qui les hante,
             L’enfant les excite à nous voir, et je tâche de le calmer.
             Imagine-les, lui dirai-je, imagine-les courant dans la neige,
             En meute hurlante, au son du fusil, avec des cavaliers,
             Et dis-moi, dis-moi lors, si tu n’aurais pas grand peur
             Qu’un loup s’arrête et te regarde sans ciller ?
                      L’enfant réfléchira longtemps.
                      J’aurais peur, dira-t-il.
                      J’aurais très peur.
                      Mais très peur qu’il me mange,
                      Sans aucun rapport avec l’adage !
                      - Vraiment aucun, conviendrai-je.
                      Tout ceci est là pour rêver.
                      - Et le zoo ? demandera-t-il.
                      Le zoo est-il là pour rêver ?
                      Et les loups, rêvent-ils aussi ?
                      Je resterai sans voix
                      - Vous auriez répondu quoi ?

early on there was trouble with my appearance. i found myself in a beauty shop, where some woman i did not like, an unkempt woman, was rubbing my legs and waxing my toes. i couldn't believe i had asked for that. maybe this was just something i had to go through to get what i wanted, which was some colors on my lower extremities, something like a border between me and the ground. i wanted dark pink or red, as usual, certainly not wax on my feet.

but when i got up from the chair things got worse. for, though i didn't ask for that, it seems the shop was going to weigh me. i think they were going to weigh me before doing something about my hair. i was upset when i got on the scale, which was wobbly and hard to see, when the dial spun and the needle stopped at 134.

134 is a lot for me. but i decided i'd take my licks, as my father used to say, and jump off the scale before it got any higher. however, the lady, she walked by and said, wow 350-400 lbs. that's a lot for you.

that sobered me up. i said, what are you talking about? i don't weigh that much, see. when i got back on, the scale went just above 140. so i hopped off again, because i'd made my point. but this lady, she really insisted. she said again, 400, that's way too much.

so i stopped passers-by. i didn't want to get on that crazy scale again. and i started asking, do i look like i weigh 400lbs? i didn't think so, and they didn't either, but i must have looked at least 150, because part of their reassurance felt like it was being polite. well, that finally pissed me off at the woman and the place. i yelled that i wanted to speak to the manager. and the next thing you know i was out of there.

but then i ran into the same kind of problem again. or at least it feels the same to me now. i was trying to communicate with someone about my writing, trying to explain the problem i have with getting it out there, and there were scenes even where i was at my desk and trying to write.

i was frustrated because i was writing the same thing over and over again, and i thought it was true and beautiful though imperfect, but that i wasn't getting anywhere, partly because i didn't know what my writing was for.

was i trying to soothe children, to inspire adults? to make myself whole, or break myself into parts? i didn't know and i was stuck like a record, so i pushed aside the pictures and the dvds that were around my writing table and i pushed away all the books that i had ever made, and i decided once again, i'd go out and look for some help.

who could possibly help me with a problem like this? i forgot how i was going about it during the day, which was exposing myself to the idea that i can't make a commitment to myself, or rather, more precisely, to the notion that my self has not quite yet come together in the way it has to so that i can be in a position to make such a commitment. i forgot all that and went for help of the type i used to seek before.

and i walked first into the streets of princeton. there i stopped in a coffee shop where i first met up with a publishing kind of lady of the sort my mother used to be. her attitude was that all writing problems could be solved from the outside, by packaging. but bizarrely, very queerly, she didn't represent marketing, no. her point of view was that everything was in the paratext, or in certain things about the appearances of language, which i care little about, such as grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

since i was still a professor, this lady was respectful of me, and it seemed to be her feeling that i would find a solution to my problem, if i would just keep having coffee with people like herself. she acknowledged that the business of writing is very hard to get in. and she wanted me to understand too that it wasn't easy either to have to keep the gate.

but i'm an impatient woman, calculating and shrewd, so i walked off from that situation, and just before i left, i communicated that the problem i was having was a little deeper than that. this led me next to an encounter with an older woman poet.

now, the older woman poet is someone i've met before, and not really someone who i want to be with. this is a big problem, because that's precisely who i am, and who i'm bound to be, especially if i ever figure out my problems with my writing. the older woman poet is exactly the person who i'm having trouble making friends with by day, though i've known her a very long time. i've been carrying her inside me since i was 23.

it's not that i mind myself, so much, that this is who i am. i'd rather be an old woman poet than just about anything else. but i'm very uncomfortable with other people seeing me that way, and feel i need all kinds of power and position so that others won't look down on me, and make me feel like trash.

they might think i'm too ugly to be exposing my feelings like that, because desire, which is energy, is the property of the young. they might think i'm deluded, because in what i write there is always the sense that what i write tomorrow will be truer, will come closer to what i want and what i'm looking for, than what i write today. and, above all, they might ridicule me around the idea of what my writing is for. who would i think i am, they'd wonder, to consider the idea that anyone in the world would want to lay hold of my thoughts, and try them for their own?

well, all this was so powerful and so negative that i was paralyzed, really, at the thought of going any further with my writing, though going further with my writing is the only thing i want to do. but when i tried to explain this to a passer-by, an objective sort of ageless, nameless person, a person of good sense, it was explained to me that in princeton there are plenty of activities for seniors, and that i'd find a woman named pam tyler, who was responsible for community outreach, down the hall to the right on the fourth floor.

i was feeling pretty low about this, about the same, i guess, as i'd felt with the scale and my helper at the beauty shop before. but i wasn't yet quite ready to scream for the manager and leave. i went meekly up the elevator and down the hall to the right. i saw the office where the desks of the community outreach teachers must be, but i skulked around rather than entering, because at this point it became clear that i had already tried this solution to my problem, back in my thirties and my forties. i knew it was a dead end and would never work.

i certainly didn't want to get involved with any poetry workshops. death on the rack would be better for my writing than that.

there was no editorial solution. even the editors were beginning to come to grips with that. and the beauty shop? it was depressing, but at least in that department, the problems were somewhat exterior, even if they were mine. so i decided i could try again to deal with those people and avoid eating candy at night. all in all i came to the conclusion that this holistic approach that i'm taking is the best one that i can, even though my strategy's radically divided between binding my body (for the sake of appearances) and trying to free my soul.

this made me uncomfortable, for sure, because the problems i am talking about are real and perhaps insurmountable, in the sense that i really am old and they're a mountain. but at least i had something solid, like the earth and ground underfoot.

Corbeau et Renard

             Le monde, le monde n’est pas trop confus pour une fable !
                      L’enfant que j’aime y prend goût
                      Et devient part de mon regard.
                      Le vent souffle sur la mer une voile
                      Que je suis de mes yeux attentifs.

                      L’enfant me demande de lui dire
                      Le Corbeau et le Renard.
                            - Vraiment ?
                            - Oui, vraiment !
             - Reviens demain, lui dis-je, reviens demain,
                      Lorsque j’y aurai bien pensé.

                      - Maître Renard, de bon matin...

                      L’enfant m’interrompt vivement :

                      - Mais non, mais pas du tout,
             Ce n’est pas comme ça que ça commence, voyons !
                      - Enfant de mon coeur,
                     Gentil compagnon de mon imagination,
                     Ne me tyrannise pas !
                     C’est moi qui raconte,
                     Et j’y ai pensé tout hier.

                     Maître Renard sur un talus perché
                     Tenait en sa gueule un coquelet.
                     Maître Corbeau par les cris attiré,
                     Lui tint à peu près ce langage.
                     Hé, bonjour, Monsieur du Renard !
                     Que vous me semblez beau !
             Quel poil éblouissant recouvre votre peau !
              Et quel panache brille à votre longue queue !
              Sans mentir, si votre esprit présente autant de flamme,
              Vous êtes le phénix des hôtes de ce bois !

                     Le renard connaît bien l’histoire.
                     Ne croyez pas qu’il va craquer !
             Il ajuste ses crocs, mord bien le volatile,
              Et dans sa tête il se met à jurer :
                     « Bougre de flatteur vil,
                     Noir oiseau de malheur infantile,
              Tu me prends donc vraiment pour un triste imbécile !
              Tes propos sont aussi éculés que ton croassement est laid !
                     Ta stupidité m’écoeure !
                     Comment vas-tu t’imaginer
              Que je tombe dans un piège aussi peu subtil ! »

                     Voici ce qu’en son for intérieur
                     Le renard pense du corbeau.
                     Mais insensiblement sa pensée
                           Se met à dériver :
                     « Que ferait de mon coquelet
                     Ce crétin si je le lâchais ?
             La belle leçon qu’il lui donnerait
                     En montant sur ses ergots
             Avec son bec bien affilé, ses griffes bien enragées !
             Vraiment, le spectacle hilarant que ça nous donnerait ! »
             A cette image, le renard ne peut contenir sa joie.
             Il ouvre une large gueule, laisse tomber sa proie.

                     Le corbeau ne s’en saisit
                           Pas ; et dit :
                     Compère, je t’ai vu plus prudent.
                     Sans mentir, il me semble
             Que tu fis deux erreurs de raisonnement :
             La première, de penser que chacun, comme toi,
             N’a qu’un ventre à la place du coeur.
                     La seconde, de te croire
             Le plus intelligent des animaux
             Quand tu n’es que le plus rusé des scélérats.
                     Je te laisse réfléchir maintenant
                     Et repenser à l’autre histoire :
                     Tu t’y contentais d’un fromage.

Un succès mineur

Robert Well-Bebert faisait sa promenade matinale, et réfléchissait. Il pensait au livre qu'il préparait. Un futur best-seller, il le savait déjà. Ce ne serait jamais que le septième, et malgré les débats qu'avaient provoqués les premiers, débats où la droite et la gauche réactionnaires avaient ravivé les vieilles questions de bienséance, tous continuaient à se vendre par centaines. Peut-être son éditeur lui avait-il fait part d'un léger recul dans l'intérêt du public, lassé de lire les mêmes histoires morbides et dégueulasses. Mais il l'avait tout de suite rassuré : « Continue comme ça, Robert, il s'agit d'une minorité, qui semble chercher la couleur et l'optimisme. Certainement des vieux ringards. Certains parlent même de “beauté de la littérature” ! »

Le public qui lui restait fidèle, pensa-t-il, ne serait pas déçu par le roman qu'il préparait. Il y était question d'un célibataire qui fréquentait des pétasses, puis les aimait de plus en plus jeunes. Alors, culpabilisé par la pression des bonnes mœurs, il allait voir un psy, qui cherchait juste à lui prendre du fric, il l'envoyait chier, retrouvait son vieux dealer, lui achetait de l'héro, et retournait aux putes. Mais là, une impasse pour l'auteur : ou bien son personnage entrait ici en conflit avec un maquereau, et se faisait trouer le ventre, ou bien, rongé par la déprime, il se faisait sauter la cervelle avec le flingue qu'il tenait de son père - flingue qui, bien sûr, avait servi à tuer des innocents dans une guerre pas si lointaine. Il fallait surtout que le passé soit sombre. Surtout, pas de figure de héros. Surtout, ne laisser au lecteur aucune prise à laquelle il puisse s'accrocher. Le monde n'était pas rose après tout. Pourquoi lui, Well-Bebert, aurait-il dû mentir, tricher, en cherchant à le rendre plus beau ? Soudain, une idée de génie lui traversa l'esprit. Et si le grand père de son héros, qui mourrait de la maladie d'Alzheimer, révélait par testament qu'il était un ancien nazi ? Well-Bebert respira une bouffée d'air vif. Il avait trouvé sa solution. Il était fort. Il était un écrivain. Il était pleinement dans l'air du temps.

Il contempla le soleil qui se levait sur La Ville, et miroitait sur l'eau tranquille de La Poëna. Six heures du matin : les rues étaient désertes, les quelques paumés qui allaient au travail ne le reconnaîtraient pas : premièrement, ses fans dormaient encore. Deuxièmement, il y avait de grandes chances pour que ces passants préfèrent la télé à la lecture. Well-Bebert méprisait les gens qui regardaient la télé. Il n'avait jamais aimé la télé. Par contre, il aimait les ponts. Les ponts décuplaient son imagination. N'était-ce pas ici qu'il avait trouvé la fin de son prochain roman ? Sur sa lancée, il décida du titre, au hasard. « La vie est une pute ». Mieux encore : « La vie est une pute mineure ». Impeccable. Nouvelle inspiration. L'air frais du mois de février lui faisait du bien.

Soudain, il sentit des doigts glacés se serrer sur sa nuque. Il chercha à se retourner, mais l'étau se resserra instantanément. Il avala sa salive. Un junkie en manque, probablement ?

- J'ai de l'argent, lâcha-t-il.

- Gardez-le, Monsieur.

Un ton sec et froid. Comme la main. L'auteur prit peur.

- Vous… Lâchez moi.

- Non, Monsieur.

Un lecteur fou, probablement ? Ces phénomènes étaient courants. Quelques années plus tôt, Well-Bebert avait été placé sous protection rapprochée, après que quelques tarés aient distribué des tracts pendant une séance de dédicaces, tracts dans lesquels ils annonçaient sa mort prochaine.

- Vous savez qui je suis ?

- Oui, Monsieur. Vous vous prétendez écrivain.

Cette fois, ce fut la frayeur. Si Well-Bebert avait été un personnage de ses romans, il se serait pissé dessus. Il se voyait déjà, pâle et pourrissant, repêché dans le fleuve. Il se dit qu'il aurait aimé assister à son enterrement.

- Lâchez-moi ! Lâchez-moi !

- Je tenais à vous dire que je n'aime pas ce que vous faites. Je trouve votre littérature fort triste. A dire vrai, elle arrive à peine à me répugner par elle-même. C'est l'état d'indifférence dans lequel elle me laisse qui me répugne. Vous avez du pouvoir, Monsieur. Quel dommage que vous vous employiez à ne surtout pas faire rêver les gens. Il est vrai que l'époque est sombre ; mais nous nous chargerons de le comprendre seuls. Je tenais à vous le dire, c'est tout. Nous ne nous reverrons plus.

La poigne se desserra, et Well-Bebert ferma les yeux. Son imagination travaillait à plein temps, et l'avait persuadé que les derniers mots de son agresseur annonçaient une détonation, que son sang allait gicler par sa nuque trouée. Mais rien ne se produisit. Il se retourna alors pour lui faire face. Disparu. Il tourna la tête à temps pour apercevoir au bout du pont un homme élancé, vêtu d'un long manteau mauve, qui courait gracieusement, avec une tranquille rapidité.

Parce qu'il s'agissait d'une affaire mineure, mais surtout parce qu'il avait trop écrit que les policiers étaient des cons et qu'il consommait de l'ecsta, on enregistra sa déposition au commissariat mais aucune enquête ne fut ouverte.

L'acte ne fut jamais revendiqué.

La Vie est une pute mineure fut un succès publicitaire. Mais elle ne traversa pas les siècles.

Si Robert Well-Bebert avait été un personnage de ses romans, il serait mort quelques années plus tard, défenestré d'une chambre d'hôtel par une jeune fille, dans un pays exotique où il serait parti s'essayer au tourisme sexuel afin de trouver de l'inspiration pour ses prochains romans.

Mais Well-Bebert est un personnage fictif de notre imagination. C'est pourquoi nous ne le reverrons plus.

here there is an element of betrayal that lurks in the back of my mind. it begins in a sprawling communal place. my father’s mansion has many rooms. in one of them is carla. she is lying on her bed and moaning, just because of the changing tides. before, it seems we were roommates, but now she’s moving out, as the rearranging of my stuff has been too heavy, too cumbersome, with all sorts of men coming in and out – nailing cabinets high on the walls, distributing decorative stones. carla says she needs her own space. and i am glad to visit her there, though she’s lying down long and thin on her white metal bed in a cleared out room and won’t stop complaining about blood.

in other rooms, there are musicians playing. the largest seems to have quite the collection of guitars, but somewhere, lost among them, lying in its case, is my own precious mandolin, which i know i need to get back to, sometime before i die. i’m not in a hurry for that confrontation. so i move in and out of the halls and talk to people, look at both the women and the men. the women i see are superficial, outlet-type girls, college girls, but not the brainy type. they are talking about their visits, their adventures, and i’m astonished to discover that they’ve actually gone on trips to strip malls and think this is part of their education. i notice that they aren’t very pretty, though they are young, tan, and smooth. so i lose interest, begin wandering in the halls, and there i cross many men, one woman too, who really grab my attention.

the woman is dark-haired and fair-skinned with freckles. she has pointed breasts and heavy forearms and only seems interested in sex. i move away from her as soon as i get this, and look for something less threatening – mystery, and a feeling of possibility and loss. i become that wayward child once again, winding in and out of spaces where adults are always seeking out each other and never minding (invisible) me. i feel wistful and desirous. several men look full of power and interesting to me, artists and musicians trying to plug into the same thing i am, but they’re all going about it in different ways. one is looking for a tall, blond woman, determined to get to his secret through her. i’m upset that i can’t distract him, want to follow him. and i do… a ways… but then i lose him. he is out of sight.

as i am focusing on this loss, i notice, from the corner of my eye, another man who is very fixed on me. he is part of a small group, who wants me to go into the room with the guitars. so i listen and peer in for a while through the windows, to see what might be happening in that space. once again my attention settles there on a man who doesn’t see me, one who is playing beautifully, and paying no attention to anyone. so it isn’t the man who invites me, but the other, who really draws me into the room, though i feel i can enter only because there is someone following me too, expecting that from me something can happen. i sit alone cagily in a corner (where i can keep track of every angle) and listen, just listen, till the glowing star leaves and it (what, the mystery?) is free for all. then i move slowly to pick up my mandolin.

the wood has disintegrated into layers near the head where the pegs are, and the strings are loose, so loose they have completely unraveled, frayed into strands of long, thick, women’s hair. i see that to fix them, i will need to spend a while with the dark woman, who i’d left some time ago. i do that, repair my instrument by pulling her hair very taught, smoothing and winding it in strands around the pegs, so as to regather and tighten all the strings. but i don’t feel like practicing. i wish rather to go home, to head back to childhood where everything is chaotic and erotic, and my mind is set on selling itself, thinking that is where the current is.

La nuit était profonde. Va savoir pourquoi ! La lune était cachée. Elle s’était réfugiée au fond d’un puits.

– Au fond d’un puits, me dit l’enfant. Mais quelle idée !

– Au fond d’un puits, parfaitement. Elle en avait assez d’éclairer des hommes aussi fous que nous le sommes. Cela faisait trop longtemps que les enfants comme toi voulaient la décrocher sans même l’avoir regardée.

– Ah bon, répond l’enfant. En somme, elle boudait au fond de son puits. Elle croyait sans doute que des adultes comme toi s’en apercevraient et s’en iraient la rechercher. « Ne soyez pas fâchée, Madame la lune, revenez parmi nous, pardonnez à ces pauvres enfants égarés. »

Je sourirai sous cape à cette pointe bien lancée.

– Mais ce n’est pas fini, dirai-je.

– Pas fini ? Quelqu’un va nous raccrocher la lune ?

– Un renard passait par là, qui vit la lune au fond du puits. Il avait grand faim, comme les renards ont toujours. « Voici un fromage délicieux qui ferait bien mon affaire », pensa-t-il aussitôt. Le seau n’était pas loin. Il y monte, il se laisse descendre au fond du puits. Et là, on peut bien imaginer sa déconvenue. Mais que faire ?

– Au moins, il n’est pas seul, dira l’enfant, moqueur. Je me demande comment tu vas t’en tirer.

– Enfant de mon cœur, écoute-moi sans m’interrompre à tout instant.

Le renard salue la lune bien bas. Et, tu peux me croire, tous deux étaient bien étonnés.

– Vous voilà donc, dit la lune après un petit moment de silence. Vous m’avez confondue avec un fromage. Ça ne vaut pas mieux que de vouloir me décrocher sans même me regarder... Maintenant, vous aimeriez bien qu’un loup passe, fit remarquer la lune.

Le renard, honteux, regarde la lune, la regarde, la regarde. Car la lune au fond du puits ne lui déplaisait pas, pour tout dire.

– C’était téléphoné, dit l’enfant.

– Mais c’est toujours téléphoné, dirai-je doucement. Tu verras...

– Et après ?

– Alors, après un bref moment de confusion, la lune est sortie de son puits tout doucement, a tiré le renard au moyen du seau. Et puis, dans le grand silence de la nuit, chacun s’est éloigné doucement...
